Potassium's Time To Shine
Ask someone to name an electrolyte and they'll probably say sodium. Push them and they may mention magnesium, the mineral of the moment. Potassium somehow gets lost. It has an identity crisis, which is odd, because your body holds more potassium inside its cells than the others, and most of us aren't getting enough. Potassium deserves a lot more noise.
The other half of the sodium story
Put simply, sodium is the electrolyte that lives outside your cells, in the blood and interstitial fluid. Potassium is its opposite number: around 98% of the potassium sits inside your cells. The two are locked in a constant exchange across every cell membrane, run by a tiny molecular machine called the sodium-potassium pump. That pump fires in every nerve and muscle you own, including the ultimate workhorse - your heart.
Potassium isn't a "nice to have." It's a biochemical necessity. It's the other half of the sodium story and neither can function properly without the other.
Most of us fall short
A serious potassium shortage – the clinical kind, called hypokalaemia – is rare. This is hospital territory, not what most people are dealing with day-to-day. Far more common is “running low” for years. This shows up as background noise: muscle weakness, the odd cramp, sluggish digestion and general fatigue. We're not saying every tired afternoon is a potassium problem – fatigue can have a hundred causes. But these symptoms overlap with signs of low potassium, and correcting a shortfall is one of the simplest things to try.
The recommended nutritional intake (RNI) for adults in the UK is 3,500 mg of potassium per day. Other countries aren’t far off. However, many health experts think it should be closer to 5,000mg. Remember too that guidelines are minimums, not optimums. But let’s stick with the official guideline.
Now, look at what people are actually getting. In the EPIC-Norfolk study, one of the largest diet cohorts ever run, the highest-intake group only just reached the official guideline – around 3,500 mg a day for men and 3,300 mg for women. The lowest group was down at 1,900–2,200 mg, a little more than half the target. And, if the health advocates are right (with their 5,000 mg target) the entire population is woefully short. People are simply not getting nearly enough potassium. Not even close.
In the same study, the people with the highest potassium intake were about 13% less likely to have a heart attack or stroke than those with the lowest intake, across nearly 25,000 adults followed for two decades. Although this evidence is observational, showing association, not proof, it lines up with the data - people who eat more potassium tend to live healthier lives, and it matches what we know about physiology, including decades of blood-pressure trials.
Higher potassium, not less salt
For as long as we can remember, the public health message on sodium has been simple: eat less. We've spent two full articles explaining why that advice is backwards (and outdated) – except for a minority of salt-sensitive people. (New to this? Start with our evidence-based article Is Salt Bad For You?) But here's the part nobody mentions: your sodium-to-potassium ratio may matter more than your sodium intake alone. A 2014 review in Advances in Nutrition found the ratio of sodium to potassium linked more closely to blood pressure and cardiovascular risk than either mineral alone. So, if you’re on the sodium bandwagon already, it’s imperative to match your sodium intake with more potassium.
Where to get potassium
There’s good news, but it comes with a small catch: potassium is easy to find in real food, but you need a proper amount of it. This is a mineral where your plate does the heavy lifting, provided it’s farmed or grown, not produced in a factory. Whole foods – fruit, vegetables, legumes and potatoes – come loaded with potassium; ultra-processed foods are largely stripped of it. Here are some reference points:

Notice the banana – the food everyone links with potassium. It sits at the bottom of this list. A jacket potato has nearly double the potassium per serving. Bananas have the reputation, but the humble spud does more work.
If you’re watching your carbohydrate intake, notice the trap. Some of the richest sources of potassium – potatoes especially – are exactly what keto and carnivore eaters skip. It's the same pattern we've flagged with sodium: the healthier your diet, the more deliberately you must seek your minerals. Leafy greens, avocado, salmon and unprocessed meat earn their place.
Easy on the supplements
There’s an important caveat with potassium: "more is not always better". When potassium comes from food, your kidneys are very effective at excreting the excess, so overdoing it through diet is nearly impossible. However, that’s not the case with supplements. Excessive potassium in supplemental form is harder to rid and can build-up to unhealthy levels. The British Heart Foundation warns against potassium supplements for older adults and anyone with diabetes or kidney problems. Too much potassium in supplemental form can disrupt electrical signaling, causing arrythmia, palpitations or fluttering. So, the message is this: get your potassium liberally from food, but cautiously from supplements.
The potassium paradox – you use a lot but don’t lose a lot
One of the hard-to-understand aspects of potassium is that your body uses a lot of potassium for ordinary day-to-day functioning, but you don’t lose a lot when sweating. You lose much more sodium from sweat than potassium. Combined with the fact that high supplemental potassium isn’t advisable, the playbook for hydration and electrolyte replacement becomes clear. Your electrolyte product should have modest potassium and generous sodium. Your diet should be about 50:50 for both.
Exercise (and sauna) replacement
When using electrolytes, aim for a ratio of 3:1 to 5:1 in favour of sodium to potassium. And keep your potassium under 300mg per litre of water. For exercise or sauna, remember that a person loses more sodium in their sweat than potassium. Replacement should mirror the loss.

- Don't mega-dose the supplements. And, if you have kidney issues or take blood-pressure medication, talk to your doctor first.
